The first day of October is a special day on the Kiwanis calendar, marking the first day of the new Kiwanis year. For all Kiwanis clubs It is a time of 'changing of the guard' from one president and board of directors to another. A time to refocus and set out new goals.
This year the Kiwanis Club of Barbados South marked the occasion with a joint installation ceremony for officers and directors with the Kiwanis Club of St. Andrew, Grenada on Saturday, October 02 via Zoom.
South Club's board and committee chairs were officially introduced to member at its regular weekly meeting on Tuesday, October 05. At this meeting, President Deanzer Roberts outlined her goals and plans for the year.
Here are the president's remarks to the meeting.
Peter F. Drucker says "Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results, not attributes."
I have been called to lead this club for the administrative year 2021-2022, a call that at times I hesitated to answer but with courage and strength and also understanding the difference I can make — HERE I AM!
My Theme for 2021-2022 is "Kiwanis Lets Team Up."
Teaming up with other clubs in Barbados, with other clubs in the district and working together better as a cohesive team here at south club.
The club like all other organizations was taken by surprise with the onset of Covid-19, but this has not deterred us, and with the pandemic heading into its third year, we must do things differently while making that impact on the children and the communities that we serve.
The legacy of this club is one I intend to carry on, one that has been admired by many and one that will continue to be stand out.
My Goals for this year are:
- To increase Kiwanis Barbados South membership by four members.
- To reactivate an SLP club at Vauxhall Primary School.
- To visit Kiwanians who are in shut ins or unable to make meetings every end of month.
- To make projects and programmes of the club more visible in the community.
- To revisit old projects.
- Work closer with clubs in the Division.
The word transparency may soon be viewed as a "stuck record" since this is what all members of this team will adopt. I have already indicated to committee chairs that no project will be implemented or no work on any project would be put into motion unless sanctioned by the Board of Directors and of course it will be made known to the full membership.
We intend to be transparent with what we do and how we do so no one is left in the dark. In that vein if you have an idea please bring it to the attention of a committee chair or someone. Do not think of it as irrelevant — your input is important.
Remember Kids Need Kiwanis but there is no Kiwanis without members, so let us team up.
